The end-of-year "commission-palooza" took Michigan and Virginia by storm this week, as the two states became the 24th and 25th states to complete new maps. Michigan's new citizen-led commission massively shook up the map, with potential upside for both parties. After Virginia's commission deadlocked, the state Supreme Court finalized a new plan that makes Rep. Abigail Spanberger (VA-07) better off but endangers Rep. Elaine Luria (VA-02).
GeorgiaLate Thursday, GOP Gov. Brian Kemp signed into law a gerrymander that aims to convert the state's delegation from 8R-6D to 9R-5D by making Democratic Rep. Lucy McBath's northern Atlanta 6th CD prohibitively Republican. Georgia's GOP legislature had passed the maps on November 22, but Kemp stalled on signing them in an effort to shorten the window for Democrats to sue. Georgia's candidate filing opens March 7.
Already, Democrats have pledged to sue on the grounds that the state's GOP-drawn maps dilute minority voting strength. But federal courts haven't typically recognized VRA claims in cases where districts aren't majority-minority (the current 6th CD is 61 percent white).
